We’ve been developing Mar Sin Leat since 2016 through writing, research and lived experience. It’s a deeply personal project, shaped by conversations and the people involved in bringing it to life.
Recently, our director has been experimenting with AI tools as part of the visual development process, mainly to generate visual references, explore mood, atmosphere, colour palette, framing and tone.
We’re currently using those references on our site to help our audience visualise the film, but we’ll not be using AI in the film itself. What we love most about filmmaking is the collaboration between actors, crew and the unexpected moments of human connection.
For us, AI is just another visual research tool, a way of sketching ideas.
We are fully aware of the wider concerns around AI, including environmental impact and creative labour. Our use has been intentionally modest and development-focused.
As a symbolic gesture towards acknowledging that impact, we’ve donated £100 to Trees for Life, a Scottish rewilding charity focused on restoring the Highlands.
