Gender Recognition Reform is about trans people not relying on medical practitioners to ‘authorise’ any one person’s gender. There are many countries across the world, including very recently Spain, where trans people can self-determine their legal gender. The UK’s first transgender sitcom, featuring the talented Rebecca Root as a 40yo who starts dating a younger man. It openly deals with transgender issues in a traditional BBC sitcom style.

Tangerine. US Feature
It’s Christmas Eve and Sin-Dee is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend hasn’t been faithful whilst she was locked up, the working girl and her best friend, Alexandra, embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumour. Shot on an iPhone 5s, the film was considered groundbreaking for exposing the LA transgender street subculture.

Something Must Break. Swedish Feature
A bitter sweet love story between Sebastian/Ellie, a gender fluid teen in the process of finding herself and Andreas a young man struggling to see beyond society’s labels.
The film has won ten awards, including the Grand Jury Award at Outfest LA, as well as Best Film and Best Performance for Saga Becker in the Lisbon International Queer Film Festival.

Southern Comfort. US Documentary
Southern Comfort documents the final year in the life of Robert Eads, a transgender man. Eads, diagnosed with ovarian cancer, was turned down for treatment by two dozen doctors out of fear that treating such a patient would hurt their reputations. By the time Eads received treatment, the cancer was too advanced to save his life. Filmmaker Kate Davis follows Robert and a group of transgender Southerners in this captivating and truly touching documentary.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize (Documentary) at Sundance Film Festival, amongst others.

Paris is Burning. US Documentary
Paris Is Burning is an American documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston. Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. Critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the “Golden Age” of New York City drag balls, and a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America.

A preoperative transgender woman takes an unexpected journey when she learns that she fathered a son, now a teenage runaway hustling on the streets of New York.
The film was recognized with positive reviews and won multiple awards, including Huffman winning a Golden Globe and a nomination for an Academy Award.

In the 1970s, a young trans woman, Patrick “Kitten” Braden, comes of age by leaving her Irish town for London, in part to look for her mother and in part because her gender identity is beyond the town’s understanding.

Bad Education. Spanish Feature
When an old friend brings filmmaker Enrique Goded a semi-autobiographical script chronicling their adolescence, Enrique is forced to relive his youth spent at a Catholic boarding school. The script follows a transvestite performer (Gael García Bernal) who reconnects with a grade school sweetheart. Spurred on by this chance encounter, the character reflects on her childhood sexual victimization and the trauma of closeting her sexual orientation.

Young Esteban wants to become a writer and also to discover the identity of his second mother, a trans woman.
The film was a commercial and critical success internationally, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in addition to the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the BAFTA Awards for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Direction (Almodóvar).

Boys Don’t Cry is an American biographical film directed by Kimberly Peirce, and co-written by Peirce and Andy Bienen. The film is a dramatization of the real-life story of Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank), an American trans man who attempts to find himself and love in Nebraska but falls victim to a brutal hate crime perpetrated by two male acquaintances.

Writer Tony Marchant’s, ‘Different for Girls’, is the story of Kim Foyle(Steven Mackintosh), a female transgender woman living in 1970’s punk-era Britain, a virtually unknown and even taboo subject.

The Crying Game. British Feature
The film explores themes of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality against the backdrop of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
A critical and commercial success, The Crying Game won the BAFTA Award for Best British Film as well as the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, alongside Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Rea, Best Supporting Actor for Davidson, and Best Film Editing.
